Thad's Story
Thad McLaurin
If you live in Greensboro, NC you've most likely heard of "Runner Dude's Fitness" and maybe even participated in some of the "Run the Boro" community runs on Saturday mornings. The person behind these is avid runner, running coach, and fitness instructor, Thad McLaurin. For nearly two decades Thad has been involved in connecting the running community and encouraging people towards fitness. In February of 2023, Thad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, putting him in the 2% of people diagnosed with this type of cancer who have no contributing lifestyle factors. Thad began targeted treatment medication right away, and it was effective for about a year. Unfortunately, in 2024 the cancer nodules on his lungs began to grow. These were then treated with radiation but continued to grow. The next steps included chemotherapy, more radiation, and IV infusions, all causing severe and unbearable side effects. Over time the cancer began to spread, and is now in his back, hip, and liver.
Throughout this entire process, Thad has remained a positive force in the community of Greensboro, sharing his journey and continuing to encourage other on theirs. The plan from here is unknown, but Thad will potentially qualify for a drug trial this spring. As we await the next steps, Heart and Sole is committed to running it's next race on Thad's behalf and will raise funding and encouragement for him and his family. He is an inspiration of perseverance, strength, optimism in the face of trials, and an unwavering example of bringing people together, particularly runners. Every mile matters, and these next 26.2 are for Thad.
